On the other side of the Atlantic we had the more rocky sounds of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Steve Miller Band, Blondieand Talking Heads.
On the pop front, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel from Genesis were topping the charts, while alternative music was making its mark with bands such as REM, The Cure and Violent Femmes.
